The West Haven Food Policy Councils (WHFPC) brings together stakeholders from diverse food-related sectors to examine how the food system is operating and to develop recommendations on how to reduce the gap between food providers and those with food insecurity.
This is a grassroots effort with the goals of educating officials, the public, shaping policy, improving coordination between existing programs and starting new programs.

Collaborate. Educate. Improve.
“Food Policy Councils are a participatory
and collaborative process that aims to
examine a broad range of food-related
issues and assets in order to provide the
best quality diet products. By their very
nature, Food Policy Councils are made
up of dedicated people from the
non-profit, public and government
sectors.”
According to the Connecticut Meal Gap Analysis report published in April 2022, West Haven, a city of 55,584 people, ranks fourth in the state behind Waterbury, Stamford and Norwalk in the gap between food distributed and meeting the need. West Haven has a food insecurity population estimated at 6,370 or about 11.6% of the residents. The report, prepared by Connecticut Foodshare was developed to inform their decision makers around the establishment of partnerships and deployment of resources while ensuring they distribute food equitably to food-insecure populations around the state.
